Field Studies - 2012

Sophomores at Yokohama International School

LAST DAY

That day,I woke up at and me and Maria went down to eat break fast.
It was a buffet and it had both japanese and european food. Ofcourse it was delicious!!
After break fast, since we have already packed our suit cases, Stella and Rika came to our room and we played some games and had some fun!
Soon it was time to head to Hiroshima station.
It was only a few minute walk and we were there.
At there, we were given some time to buy gifts so I bought some Momijimanjyu which is a famous Hiroshima sweet that is shaped like a maple leef and it is really good!!
Then we soon got on the Shinkansen.
Since everyone was tired, most of us slept and it was quiet.
After taking 2 other trains, i got home and because i was tired, i was happy to go home but was sad that the field study was already over...
When I got home, i was very happy to see my mom and my dog!!

Field study this year was so much fun and it is now a great memory!!I am already looking forward to field study next year!

Day 5 + Overall Reflection

Day 5

Final day in Hiroshima. The only things we did were pack, buy souvenirs, and ride the Shinkansen back home. In the morning, Kaho and I went downstairs to eat breakfast. After we ate, we went back upstairs to do something last minute packing, and met the rest of the group downstairs in the lobby. We left the hotel and walked to Hiroshima Station, where we were allowed some time to buy souvenirs and buy food for the train ride. When it was time, we got on the Shinkansen, where mostly everyone slept. It was very relaxing.

Overall reflection

Hiroshima was great. I loved sightseeing there; Himeji Castle and Miyajima were very beautiful. I’m also glad to have learned of the effects of the a-bomb. Since I was raised in the States, I’ve only learned the Americans’ side of the war. However, after hearing Matsubara-san’s story, and going to the museums and seeing what had happened, I have learned the things that one bomb had done to thousands of innocent people.

Highlights of the trip:

-Himeji Castle: I’m so glad it was sunny all week; it would have sucked if it was cloudy/ rainy. Himeji Castle was so pretty!!!

-First Hotel: I liked the Japanese side of the room :) Kaho, Stella, Rika, and I played card games—it was really fun! The food was also good...

-Lecture by Matsubara-san, going to the museums, eating at the okonomiyaki shop

-Shukkeien: Gosh it was so pretty!! I want to go again :)

-Miyajima: It was so pretty. The bike ride was really fun. Dinner after that with Kazune and Resa was fun as well.

Our final day & over view

Our final day in Hiroshima didn't consist of much. Basically, packing, room check, buying lunch, getting on the shinkansen and finally arriving home! But the best part of our last day was our buffet breakfast!!!!!! Food, food, food, food, food, I'm suprised Aaron and Mido didn't wake up in time.

Although Hiroshima wasn't my first choice and due to my wrist I had to go, and to tell you the truth i wasn't looking forward to going too but it came out to be one of my favorite Field Studies yet! From inspirational people, to hiking, to getting personally attacked by a deer and mido getting attacked by a baboon, hiroshima was great fun. McDonalds was the highlight of the trip and I'm sure I'm not the only person too. I learnt many new things about the A-bomb and I was very glad to be able to meet a survivor of the A-bomb. (Now I'm even more suprised that I have never been to Hiroshima in my 10 years of living in Japan, Crazy!)

Best parts of the trip:

- talking to new people

- learning about japans history

- mcdonalds

- baboon attacks

- deer eating the maps

- our exciting adventure in the mall that we went to for our last dinner

I loved Hiroshima!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Day 5 + Reveiw

On Friday we got to eat a BUFFET BREAKFAST!! It was reeeeeeeaaaaallllyyyy gooood :) After breakfast me,  Charlotte and Xi went to Aaron and Mido's room to get the computers because they needed to be packed. Aaron was extremely grumpy when he opened the door and only gave us one box and a computer before he shut the door. He and Mido hadnt slept that much. Eventually we managed to get all the computers and boxes and took them up to our room. Me and Resa packed pretty quickley and went down to the lobby. Once everyone had arrived we checked out of the hotel and went to Hiroshima station. We had 20 minutes to buy lunch and souveniers, we went to a convenient store and brought some onigiris, then sat down in the tea shop and waited for everyone else. The train ride was much nicer this time because we didnt need to change like we did on Monday. For the first hour I tried to sleep, but I couldnt, so I just listened to music. Then we ate lunch and talked untill we reached Shin-Yokohama.

To be honest, I only chose Hiroshima because I am terrified of diving and because I really didnt want to hike. I didnt expect to enjoy this field studies as much as I did. I actually think that Hiroshima was the MOST FUN field studies I have had so far. I have lived in Japan for about 9 and a half years and never gone to Hiroshima or Nagasaki before and I didnt know a lot about the atom bomb or what happend. But after this trip I know so much more than before, and I got to meet an A bomb survivor, Matsubara san and hear her story. There aren't many people that have done that. The thing that affected me the most was reading the survivors own accounts of what happend in the museum and looking at their drawings and paintings. Their stories really showed how the bomb had horrible effects on the lives of the people in Hiroshima.

But my favorite thing about going to Hiroshima was all the fun times that I had with my friends, there are so many that its hard to remember... Here are some of them:
- jumping on the beds with Resa
- Mido running away from the monkeys (thinking that they were chasing him)
- Mido being chased by the two dears
- Charlotte running away from a dear
- Aaron and Mido eating Mcdonalds everyday
- watching the man play guitar and sing under the bridge
- stalking people (Aaron, random japanese people, couples in the japanese garden...)
- watching Kana chase the japanese couple with her camera
- going up and down the elevator in the department store
- wearing the japanese head things
- calling Charlotte and Xi's room just to annoy them.
AND MANY MORE....
Cecilia

Day 5
The last day was only travelling and buying some souvenirs. The shinkansen ride was different to the ride we had on the first day; everyone was too exhausted to do anything and mostly everyone slept.
In the morning, we had a buffet at the hotel. Kazune and I went a bit too early... (7:30ish) and we didn't really eat much. Then we went back to our rooms, did some final packing and went to the lobby. From there, we went to the station and spent some time buying some souvenirs such as the momiji manjuu. Mostly everyone had bags of souvenirs in their hands and their luggage seemed a bit bigger compared to the first day. Then we got on the shinkansen and reached Yamate at around... 3pm?

Overall Reflection
For this field studies, I chose Hiroshima because I heard it wasn't as hard and tiring as the other two places (Izu and Iya.) After field studies I asked people that went to Izu and Iya how their trip w as and most of them said it was tiring but fun. Hiroshima wasn't that tiring because we didn't have to scuba or hike the whole day. However, it did make us feel and learn many things. Since Hiroshima was a historical and cultural trip, I learnt many things about the A-bomb and the short and long-term effects of it. It was shocking to hear Ms. Matsubara's experience about the A-bomb and I realized the lack of knowledge I had about the bomb. Just one uranium bomb can take away many people's life and totally change people's lives. It was depressing to hear how Ms. Matsubara was treated after the bomb. Since she had some scars, the society did not accept her; in the train, people refused to sit near her and even though she was able to graduate school, she could not get any job and coudn't find someone she can marry. From then, she worked hard for peace, she sent letters to President Obama and attended many events.
It was surprising when someone asked her if she h ated or felt enmity towards Americans and she answered no. Ofcourse, in the beginning, she was not able to forgive them because they had ruined her life but as she met different Americans, she realized that not all Americans are bad. She thought that there are always good and bad people in the world.
I don't think I can express in words how I felt when I went to the museum where it exhibited clothing, objects and pictures of people who were affected by the bomb. It showed pictures of people with serious burns and hair loss. I couldn't bear looking at them. As I read the captions and explanations written below the pictures and objects, I noticed that many people died a day after the bomb. I don't know which is worse, dying right at the moment the bomb exploded, or suffering a whole day and dying. I also saw drawings that showed what it was like after the war; mothers carrying their dead babies, dead bodies floating in the river and people with serious burns roaming around like zombies not knowing where to go. It expressed someth ing different  to pictures ( I don't really know how to explain it) and it was painful looking at them.
Although going to the peace museum and knowing more about the A-bomb was not fun, the trip itself was enjoyable. I was also able to learn more about my classmates and teachers. I hope I can somehow make use of this experience and commit to peace. It made me realize, again that there is nothing good about war. It is destruction and death; no one benefits from war.
I wish I can go to Hiroshima again with the same member one day.

Day 5 - Review

We didn't do much on the last day. The only thing we got to do at Hiroshima on the last day was to eat breakfast (a buffet! :D) and buy some souvenirs at the station.
The breakfast was veryy good, since it was a buffet we got to eat various types of food and eat A LOT :D (although i didn't eat much since I wasn't very hungryy... ahh I'm starting to regret about it D:). After we had breakfast until 8:30, we left the hotel and walked to Hiroshima station. We spent some time buying souvenirs here. I bought a packet of oysters, a piece of conger eel, a hiroshima tsuke-men set, and a food called shiokara which has some oyster included to it (: (apparently called as "salted fish guts" in English..)
After we used some of our time buying souvenirs, we soon went on the train for Shin-Yokohama station and got home at around 15:00 or so.

To be honest, I wasn't very excited for field studies this year (as always) and wasn't expecting much for it, since some of my friends have already gone to Hiroshima and said "It was pretty lame". However, by going to Hiroshima for field studies this year, I realized that their words were totally wrong, or their planning for field studies was just simply really poor which made their field studies really boring. haha sucks to them (: jokingg but yes... HIROSHIMA WAS SO MUCH FUN (: We were able to experience so many thing we'd never be able to at Tokyo (or even for our whole lifetime :D), such as going to various castles and having a close look to them.
Also it was a great opportunity to learn about the atomic bomb since I had some interest to it (although this may sound imprudent..) and was thinking I'd want to know about it more. The stories of the Hiroshima atomic bom were as expected, very cruel and excruciatingly painful to hear or know about. When listening to Matsubara san's story, I realized how happy and fortunate we are for having a life without mostly anything lacking. It is hard to believe how still many people are suffering from the A-bomb disease and will for their rest of their lifetime... I think what the American's did are unforgivable, but as Matsubara-san said, we do have to accept their sin and forgive them sometime since as she says, not all American's are "bad", in fact, most of them are "good", just that the one's who were involved in this plan were "bad".

Thinking back about it... Hiroshima was great. We were able to make many memories at Hiroshima (Even the time we spent for hiking has become a good memory!), and those unforgettable memories are priceless. Thank you to the school who gave us a great opportunity for everything, and Ms. De vries, Ms. Wilson, and Genki-san who accompanied us for this field studies and take cared of us.
Now I really miss it, and I wish I can go back to those days. (the time where I'm not piled up with homework... D:) Hope we'll be able to go to Hiroshima some time again, with ALL of us (:

Hiroshima day 5 and overall reflection

The only thing we got to on our last day in Hiroshima, was to eat
breakfast and go home.
Anjali and I were the first to get to the breakfast 'Äìsecondwas Ms.De
Vries :) I had some salad, eggs, bacons, and nori. Since we had
ourbreakfast early, we went back to our room and watched TV/slept after
eating. Then we left our hotel, Hotel New Hiroden, and walked toHiroshima station.
There, we had some time to buy souvenirs and lunch. I boughtsome
momiji-manjyu for my family although I had some already from Miyajima.
(Ithough more of them would be better :D) After a while, we went on
theshinkansen to get back to Shin-Yokohama station. Overall, the trip to Hiroshima was better than I expected; Iwas not that
excited to be there before the field studies since I'Äôve been therelast
year with my family. Last time I visited Hiroshima, I went to the Peace Park andMiyajima like
this time, but I stayed at each of the places for less time, since the main
reason we went to Hiroshima was to visit my grandfather'Äôs gravethere and
not sightseeing. However, this time I got to stay at the place for alonger
time for looking in to the place in more depth, with some guidance
andexplanation of the history of Hiroshima. Listening to stories of the
time theA-bomb was dropped from Matsubara-san, the victim of the Little
Boy, was agreat experience for us to understand how much damage it gave to
Hiroshima andthe people there physically and mentally, by only one bomb.
The Memorial PeaceMuseum taught me a lot about the effect of the Little
Boy: the short-termeffects and the long-term effects. Although hearing and
seeing about the A-bombwas depressing, I believe that it was a great
opportunity for us to know howmuch a war can destroy human life and
society. Other than getting to know the history of Hiroshima, theplace was nice as
well. We got to go hiking in the mountains, which we couldnever do in
Tokyo. Sightseeing at Miyajima was great too: the floating toriiand the
actual shrine of Itsukushima, the deer, and the beach. I'Äôve alsonoticed
that the night sky in Tokyo is brighter than in Hiroshima after comingback
home. When we went to the Peace Park in the night for stargazing, we
wereable to see little stars that we cannot see in Tokyo.

Thinking back, staying at Hiroshima for five days was waybetter than I
expected (and better than now being back in Tokyo, dying of
boredom).I'Äôll love to be there again, especially Miyajima where we went
biking :)

Hiroshima Day 5

On our last day, we didnt do anything. Our schedule was to go straight
back home. At 7:45 Charlotte and I went down to the 2nd floor for breakfast; it was a
buffet. They had 2 types of breakfast; Western and Japanese. I had a
little bit of both. It was declicious. AFter breakfast we packed up the
computers and gave it to genki san. Between 10:35~11:00 we took a
shinkansen back to shinyokohama. Nothing interesting went on that day
besides the part where we (Ms. Wilson, charlotte and I) got split with the
rest of the group since we got on the train earlier than the other people.
We got off at the next station which was Kikuna and waited for the next
train where everybody was on. We arrived at Yamate around 3:00. This trip was more fun than I had expected; especially the part where Mido
was attacked by deer and monkey. The trips to mcdonlad were also very
entertaining. We were about to have a bet on whether the guys could eat a
double quater pound hamburger and 5 cheese burgers each. we didnt end up
doing it since aaron was already full from dinner and they were sick of
hamburgeres so they decided not to. I've read about the nuclear bomb in Hiroshima 2 years ago in Japanese
class but i didnt understand it 100%. Now I understand how it happened and
what the survivors thought about it. The museums showed a lot of injured
people and it was depressing. However, the view in Hiroshima was beautiful. They had like old monuments
and it was less polluted than Tokyo. The sky was very blue and they had
really green grass. I think Miyajima was the prettiest. They had a mixture
of colours. The shrines were orange and the water was greenish blue. It
was all nature; They had deer everywhere and baboons on the top of the
hills. The maple cookies were really delicious. I especially liked the
custard one. Overall I thought Hiroshima was fun and I've learnt a lot about its
hisotry.
